D55 Background

Reliably integrated systems means the customer can scale efficiently and a new data lake has improved data quality and enabled rapid data-driven decision making to release new and innovative solutions.

Our customer aims to provide green energy to British businesses - particularly large corporates – and support them with their ESG and sustainability objectives. They also offer customers advanced optimisation tools to drive down energy consumption.

Challenge

The customer hoped to rely on automation and systems to do the heavy-lifting as they scaled, avoiding too many additional operational headcount. They had already deployed multiple best in class commercial off-the-shelf systems, but a collaborative review of their end-to-end processes revealed a few challenges:

1. Whilst each specialist system performed effectively they were not designed to interoperate with other applications, so staff working across different systems had to enter similar data multiple times.

2. Data wasn’t controlled centrally or synchronised in real time, making it slow to aggregate and analyse across the multiple data sets.

3. Requests to the vendors to enhance their SaaS products were often not resolved as fast as a nimble business would like.

Solution

D55 built a new data lake and defined automation rules. We initially created a SaaS integration which connects to the customer’s core systems and pulls key data into a central data lake. This made it easy for analysts to know where to find data – a single central source. The next stage was to make event driven workflows, building business logic defined by their team to automate both data processing and data consistency across multiple systems. The core AWS technologies involved included Step Functions, Lambda, API Gateway as well as Lake Formation for data security and Cognito for authentication against the customer’s centralised directory.

Looking Forward

Unlocking the power of Artificial Intelligence. The customer is well positioned to investigate the use of platforms such as Bedrock to aid the development of new offerings in the future. They control their own destiny as they fully own their data and can enhance business logic without reliance on third party vendors.

AWS enables the best use of the customer’s data. Data is actually their core product and output - rather than energy itself - and now that they have a trusted data source which will remain consistent, more time can be spent on analysis, rather than manual data admin.
